Plastic bags banned

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has banned low standard plastic bags from today.

“We have banned polythene bags in the city from today,” said Shanta Ram Pokhrel, KMC spokesperson. “In the first phase — 15 days — we will carry out publicity campaign, then we will fine violators,” he said.

Anyone carrying black plastic bags will be fined Rs 500 and producers and distributors will be fined Rs 1,000, said KMC officials.

Plastic bag producers have objected. Although KMC has banned less than 35 micron plastic bags, producers insist on allowing use of at least 20 micron plastic bags.

According to KMC, about 60 local companies in the city produce plastic bags and most of the products are sub-standard, as authorities have failed to keep tabs.
